Wayqeycuna

Wayqeycuna is Tiziano Cruz’ road back to the mountains of his childhood. A militant yet sensitive journey which he shares with the audience by making the stage a space for reconciliation and consolation.

Tiziano Cruz comes from the mountains in northern Argentina, from a very poor region which is part of the province of Jujuy. Having left his village to go to university, he took refuge in “artistic institutions,” in order, he says, “to not die.”. Wayqeycuna (meaning “my brothers” in the Quechua language) is the third piece in his trilogy Tres Maneras de Cantarle a una Montaña [Three ways of Singing to a Mountain] in which the artist re-lives the experience of his childhood in order to lay out a stress test of his own political situation. What exactly is his place in the market for Art, in a world where capitalist exploitation and cultural colonialism tear apart the landscapes and communities of the marginalized? How does he create art for the poor, the excluded, the dead, from where he is in this moment? Through a series of poetic gestures, archival images shot in his mountains, and the shared rituals in which he must deal with grieving for his sister, Tiziano Cruz attempts to counter the violence of the world through the generation of a powerful feeling of community. The piece is for the audience and for those he is mourning, an astonishing banquet of feeling, an opportunity to reimagine together that which connects us all.

→ An exchange with the artistic team will take place after the performance on 17 June

→ In connection with the show, Tiziano Cruz is offering ‘Bread for the world’, a cooking and sharing workshop, to be held on Sunday 15 June from 3pm to 6pm at the Cuisine Commune, Fives.
