Cette note qui commence au fond de ma gorge

By rejecting Bahia, Aref is rejecting everything. In this new work by Fabrice Melquiot, two lovers face off in a poetic, passionate duel, in which words and music blend together, exploring the boundaries of love, identity and exile.

Cette note qui commence au fond de ma gorge [This note which starts at the bottom of my throat] is a poignant confrontation using alexandrines and decasyllables by the writer Fabrice Melquiot. The story is based on the life of the Afghan musician Esmatullah Alizadah, who performs the role of Aref and composed the music for the work, in which we hear the dambura, the harmonium and tablas. Aref no longer loves Bahia, he has just informed her of that fact. Refusing to return to Afghanistan and the Taliban regime, he is now seeking refuge in his music, which he plans to share with other exiled friends throughout Europe. But young, headstrong, twenty-year-old Bahia is not going down without a fight. With a text which examines the quest for the self, for our lost roots and the idea of needing to flee in order to find one’s place, Aref and Bahia create a window into the world of today, where love, exile and music face off, blend and challenge each other in their battle to exist.
