Rada Akbar

Biography

Rada Akbar is an Afghan-born conceptual artist and photographer. Her work focuses on denouncing the oppression of women in Afghanistan and highlighting the strength of Afghan women through her photographic portraits. Akbar organized the Superwomen exhibition from 2018 to 2021, which featured exquisitely crafted gowns representing prominent Afghan women who rose to fame in a patriarchal culture. Her work was also part of the 2022 group exhibition, Before Silence: Afghan Artists in Exile, by PEN America’s Artists at Risk Connection and Art at a Time Like. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Museu de l’Art Prohibit in Barcelona. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowship, such as the Prince Claus Award or the PAUSE artistic fellowship, and her work has been awarded an Honorable Mention by UNICEF Photo of the Year in Berlin in 2019. She currently lives and works in Paris. In 2023 - 2024, her work will be exhibited in the “Invisible Power” exhibition in ACUD art gallery, Berlin and in the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, among others. She will also hold a solo exhibition in the Museo La Neomudéjar in Madrid.
