Récits de maillages : végétal et industrie

For Latitudes Contemporaines, the duo Atelier Za’atar invites the audience to explore with their senses the Fives Cail neighborhood in Lille, including the stories of its residents, the movements of its plant life and the industrial history of the neighborhood.

Atelier Za’atar is a duo consisting of Anna Lena Hahn, a landscape artist and geographer, and Titiane Haton, an urban planner and ‘picker.’ Together they explore various landscapes in order to delicately reveal the interconnections of all the species inhabiting them. In Lille, they invite us to join a micro-promenade and walk in which the plant life becomes the through line for a pluralistic story. Moving between living archives and contemporary statements, they weave a mesh of stories which connect human and plant life migrations to the industrial changes which have affected the area. By exploring the strata of the past as well as the current dynamics of Fives Cail, they allow us to see the urban space from a different perspective, finding unexpected regenerative movements. Throughout the walk, stories come to life as we experience things using all five senses: we hear about memories of the space, we smell the essences circulating there, we even taste the movements in the stories … This is an invitation to rediscover Fives Cail, noticing the subtle connections between all the beings living there.

Biography(s)

Atelier Za’atar is a design and mediation duo composed of Anna Lena Hahn, a landscape designer and geographer, and Titiane Haton, an urbanist and herbalist. Since 2019, we have been creating spaces that highlight the interweaving between plant and human species. Each project emerges from the landscape, its plants, and the participants and we collaborate with cultural, educational, and environmental partners. Anna Lena is doing research on design in industrial areas, while Titiane shares knowledge on wild edible plants through workshops and publications (2024-2025).
