Schönheit ist Nebensache, ou la beauté s’avère accessoire

Through the dance cycle Afectos Humanos by Dore Hoyer and a viola sonata by Paul Hindemith, Pol Pi creates dialogues between the pieces and time itself, a sensitive work which reflects how much art and politics are linked.

“Beauty proves to be ancillary.” is one of the instructions which accompany the beginning of the 4th movement of the viola sonata opus 25 no. 1 by the German composer Paul Hindemith. This could also have been said by his expressionist compatriot and choreographer Dore Hoyer, the creator of the dance cycle Afectos Humanos on which Pol Pi has been working for six years. Two pieces consisting of five short solos, as minimal as they are filled with expressivity, composed by artists who have been forced to live under totalitarian governments. Pol Pi creates a dialogue between the two pieces, which resonate with the political situation in his native country, Brazil, under Bolsonaro. Using words, music and movement, a delicate trio is created, as intimate as it is political. Since the election of President Lula, in early 2023, Pol Pi has chosen to invite another performer to share the final movement of this trio, whose own journey has also been affected by major political events. For Latitudes Contemporaines, Afghan performer Fatima Tawakkuli will join him on stage.
