Voir clair avec Monique Wittig

Around a fire, words which free our thoughts: the actress Adèle Haenel and the musician Caro Geryl invite us into an intimate, freeing encounter dealing with the explosive power of the writings of Monique Wittig.

DameChevaliers, an artistic feminist collective founded by Caro Geryl and Adèle Haenel, does a deep dive into the cult piece La pensée straight by Monique Wittig, a major figure of the Women’s Liberation Movement and the lesbian movement, and a pioneer in gender studies. In a space-time outside our world, Adèle Haenel recites these texts as if telling a story. Except that in this story there is no mention of a Prince Charming but an obligatory heterosexuality, and the Good Fairies are named Monique Wittig, Sara Ahmed, Audre Lorde, Elsa Dorlin and Adrienne Rich … In what they describe as “the last space for the theatre before the union meeting,” DameChevaliers builds a temporary community around thoughts whose strength is heightened by emotion. A space for seeing clearly and for inventing another world.

Biography(s)

Adèle Haenel (Paris)
Adèle Haenel is an actress. In theater and choreography, she collaborates with Gisèle Vienne, performing and co-writing the texts for the shows L’Étang (2020) and Extra Life (2023), both presented at the Festival d’Automne in Paris. She is also co-founder of the feminist collective Damechevaliers, with which she conducts theatrical research on the links between language, power, and collective struggles. In 2022, she created the sound design and music for the reading of Monique Wittig’s Le Voyage sans fin at the Maison de la Poésie with Caro Geryl. She has appeared in around twenty films, including 120 Beats per Minute (Robin Campillo, 2017), The Unknown Girl (Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, 2016) and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Céline Sciamma, 2019). Since 2020, she has focused her activities on the performing arts.

Caro Geryl (Marseille)
Caro Geryl began her career as a musician/drummer, accompanying artists such as Gala, Pomme, Emel Mathlouti, Canine, Naïve New Beaters, Laura Cahen, Têtes Raides, Jeanne Cherhal, Silly Boy Blue, and Yelli Yelli. In 2023, Adèle Haenel and Gisèle Vienne invited her to join the Damechevaliers collective as a sound designer for a reading of Monique Wittig’s play Le voyage sans fin (The Endless Journey). This collaboration gave rise to a powerful electro track, an anthem against sexist violence: “Riposte Tribute to Audre Lorde.” Following this experience, the collective decided to stage La pensée Straight by the same author and is working in parallel on the release of a first EP.
