Mascarades
Mami Wata is a water goddess, a figure who emerges from the depths of the night, representing both power and sexuality. In Mascarades, Betty Tchomanga encounters her, embodies her and brings out of the deepest waters a series of faces. A rare, powerful work.
The myth of Mami Wata also exists in Bénin, Cameroon, the Congo, Brazil and in Cuba, the incarnation of the ambivalences of a complex colonial history. A figure of desire, and of monstruosity, an “other” who fascinates, whom we typically reject, Mami Wata comes to life in the movements of Betty Tchomanga, jumping. She jumps out of exultation, to resist, to keep going: through this repetitive vertical movement, figures appear, overflowing. Now other masks, other hybrids, other bodies leap forcefully out of the depths of the water.
