La fracture

In this raw, edgy one-woman-show, Yasmine Yahiatène is tracking Ahmed, her father, whom she basically had to mourn while he was still alive. Words and images dialogue with each other, filling some of the fractures exposed in the silence.

Papa, do you know what the war in Algeria and alcohol have in common? I found three points: silence, the taboo, and shame.” Using video and geo-mapping as essential components and scene partners, Yasmine Yahiatène explores the holes and flaws in her painful, interrupted relationship with her father, finding his journey among the fragments of her heritage which are part of her but which nonetheless feel very far away. Images of her personal archives and some historical documents blend together, and the memory of Ahmed begins to form in little bits: his Kabylian roots, his exile to France in the middle of the Algerian revolution, his losing his native language, which he left behind in order to better assimilate to the colonial conqueror … But she includes his overpowering elation during the World Cup final in 1998, the two goals scored by Zinédine Zidane, a glorious version of a Franco-Algerian memory covered in scars. And between them is Ahmed’s alcohol abuse, a poor remedy for his deconstructed past.
