Extinction Room (Hopeless.)

Extinction Room (Hopeless.) tells the stories of a disappearing nature. A poignant performative installation, which makes us hear and feel the effects of the climate crisis on living species.

Through a soundscape of bird songs and cries, developed in collaboration with composer AGF (alias Antye Greie), three performers tell the story of these extinct or endangered species. Between sound installation and dance performance, between scientific narratives and myths, Extinction Room (Hopeless.) brings the question of mass extinction caused by global warming to a sensitive level. Carried by these stories, the performers lead us into an immersive experience that questions past, present and future losses.

Biography(s)

Sergiu Matis is a Romanian choreographer born in 1981 in Cluj-Napoca. He received his dance training at the Liceul de Coregra e in Cluj and at the Mannheima Dance Academy, and started his career at the Tanztheater Nuremberg. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 2008, creating his own works such as Keep It Real (2013), Explicit Content (2015), Neverendings (2017), Hopeless. (2019) and UNREST (2021). Her dance practice could be seen as a relentless search through the corporeal and digital archives, to place a critical lens on what has been taken away, to rescue what was presumed lost and to reinvent what was not documented. The accumulation of history serves as an old map, which becomes a starting point towards the revelation of a new dance imaginary. His work shatters preconceived ideas and reflects the upheavals of our time.
