“Beauty is incidental” (Schönheit ist Nebensache) is one of the instructions that appears at the beginning of the 4th movement of the Sonata for solo viola op. 25 no.1 by the German composer Paul Hindemith (1895-1963). It could have been said by his compatriot and expressionist choreographer Dore Hoyer (1911-1967), author of the dance cycle Afectos Humanos, on which Pol Pi has been working for the past six years.
Two works made up of five short solos as pure as they are expressive, composed by artists who suffered the consequences of totalitarian governments, whether Nazism or Stalinism. Through the reading of letters written by Hoyer and Hindemith, Pol Pi makes them dialogue with each other as well as with the political situation in Brazil under the government of Bolsonaro. Through words, music and movement, a delicate trio is woven, as intimate as it is political.
Since the election of Lula at the beginning of 2023 in his native country, Pol Pi has chosen to invite a performer living in the city hosting the show, whose career has also been marked by major political issues, to join this trio. An artist to whom Pol wishes to give voice, music and movement, sharing the last movement of Hindemith’s Sonata, “slowly and with great expressivity”, and the last dance of the Afectos Humanos cycle, “Love”.
