Récital : François Chaignaud danse Isadora Duncan

In an intimate, sculptural setting, François Chaignaud revisits the tradition of the recital, performing a series of sensual, free dances by Isadora Duncan.

A recital is an artistic event given by a single performer, dedicated to a specific repertory. The choreographer François Chaignaud magnifies the exercise by choosing the repertory and universe of Isadora Duncan, the celebrating modern dance pioneer. Considered revolutionary at the end of the 19th century, her movements, freed from the constricting corsets of the time and inspired by ancient Grecian body shapes, resonate in Chaignaud’s vision and interpretation. Accompanied by the pianist Romain Louveau, this talented choreographer uses Duncan’s dances to explore contemporary ways of creating.

Biography(s)

François Chaignaud graduated in 2003 from the CNSM in Paris and has collaborated with many choreographers (Alain Buffard, Boris Charmatz, Emmanuelle Huynh or Gilles Jobin). Since the creation of his first piece in 2004, he has pursued a multiple career as a dancer, choreographer, singer, actor, historian and cabaret artist. His work, which weaves for dance the dream of a global expression digging into the porosity and potentialities of the body, is very early marked by the articulation of song and dance (Думи мої, 2013). With a degree in history, he nourishes his art with in-depth research – a historical depth that can be seen in his own pieces as well as in the numerous collaborations he never ceases to carry out, notably with cabaret artist Jérôme Marin (Sous l’ombrelle, 2011), Marie Caroline Hominal (Duchesses, 2009), or visual artist Théo Mercier (Radio Vinci Park, 2016).

From 2005 to 2016, François Chaignaud created with Cecilia Bengolea several outstanding pieces that have been presented worldwide, including Pâquerettes (2005-2008), Sylphides (2009), (M)IMOSA (co-written and performed with Trajal Harrell and Marlene Monteiro Freitas, 2011), Dub Love (2013) and DFS (2016). In 2021, he founded the structure Mandorle Productions, which affirms his desire to pursue an artistic approach marked by numerous collaborations. He created with Nino Laisné Romances inciertos, another Orlando (2017), a danced and sung show based on the androgynous figures of Spanish baroque folklore, presented at the 72nd edition of the Avignon Festival. Together, they are currently pursuing a new research project on couple dances in South America. Continuing to develop his relationship with music, François Chaignaud presents Symphonia Harmoniæ Cælesitum Revelationum (2019) with Marie-Pierre Brébant, a piece in which he sings the complete works of Hildegarde von Bingen. In 2020, he co-signed a new duet with the butoh icon Akaji Maro GOLD SHOWER, presented at the Festival d’Automne in Paris. In the same year he performed Un boléro, choreographed in dialogue with Dominique Brun and the orchestra Les Siècles, based on the work of Bronislava Nijinska. For several years, he has also been developing a choreographic work outside his own stage practice. In 2018, he created Soufflette for the 14 dancers of the Norwegian ballet Carte Blanche, and is currently preparing t u m u l u s, a sung and danced piece for 13 performers, co-signed with Geoffroy Jourdain (Les Cris de Paris), which will be presented in May 2022. In October, he will create a short piece (Blasons) for the Madeira-based company Dançando com a Diferença.

François Chaignaud was awarded the “Choreographic Personality” prize by the Syndicat de la critique in 2021. Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres, he is an associate artist at Bonlieu, Scène Nationale d’Annecy, and at Chaillot – Théâtre National de la Danse in Paris.
