Outrar

Which bodies are considered “other”? Creating dialogue between the practice of the choreographer Lia Rodrigues, Calixto Neto offers us his perspective on marginalized bodies while also embodying his own otherness.

Outrar is a project initiated by the choreographer Lia Rodrigues: forced to stay home in Brazil during the lockdowns of the Covid-19 crisis, she conceived the project to be implemented and worked on by Brazilian performers who were located in Europe, using long-distance dialogue during the process. Using a pre-set soundtrack and an extensive list of choreographic instructions, the dancers have worked through a long-distance dialogue. This collective work added up to three different versions of Outrar; one of which was by Calixto Neto, and for which he chose a split path. How does one embody a body which is already socially “other”? A faceless body, without a clear identity; a body recognizable only because of its ability to disrupt the norm, a deviant body. In the friction between the impulse to become the other and the impossibility of being that other, he finds himself and his body as a source of power and transformation.
