Life is not useful (or it is what it is)

If life is indeed not useful, dance is not particuarly useful either … But when Bruno Freire (re)captures the positive, the joy in both, things change, with his dance solo‑lecture demonstration based on the poignant texts written by the philosopher and activist Ailton Krenak.

“Life is not useful,” is the title of an essay written by Ailton Krenak. He is a Brazilian philosopher, activist and ecologist, as well as one of the most important indigenous leaders of the krenak people in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Based on this text, Bruno Freire has created a solo danced lecture-demonstration, transcribing the text’s words into movement. His dancing is a way of inhabiting Krenak’s thoughts, letting the words filter through him, which categorically denounce those who “eat” the world and seek to re-render bodies and cities feral or wild. His dancing attempts to “slow down the end of the world,” moving toward seeking something positive and joyful in a world drifting inevitably toward disaster.
