Into the open

Dance and music, fused: an explosive concert performance presented by the Flemish duo Voetvolk, in a giant breaking wave of collective energy.

Voetvolk consists of the dancer and choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez and the composer and  DJ Maarten Van Cauwenberghe. They are known for their willingness to cross lines, breaking free from traditional moorings: their most recent creation, Into The Open, is one of these daring works. Onstage, seven performers, four dancers and three musicians, freely exchange their roles and styles, expressively sharing the vibrations of the music. It is at once a concert, a dance piece and a giant party: an unstoppable wave of contagious, rippling energy, irresistible for all. Into The Open invites us to share this collective, joyful leap into limbo.

Biography(s)

Voetvolk (Dutch for ‘infantry’) is a Belgian contemporary dance and performance company, founded in 2007 by dancer/choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez and musician/composer Maarten Van Cauwenberghe. Together they’ve created more than 10 productions already, e.g. It’s going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend (2012), AH/HA (2014), Lisbeth Gruwez dances Bob Dylan (2015), We’re pretty fuckin’ far from okay (2016), The Sea Within (2018), Piano Works Debussy (2020) and Into The Open (2022)

Their work is an ongoing conversation between corporal and auditive movement: Gruwez and Van Cauwenberghe direct each other in order to achieve an organic symbiosis within a fixed frame. This brings in the element of performance that identifies every production: the connection between the aural and the visual/physical is always (a)live. The last few years Voetvolk has taken an interest in looking for new ways to engage with (new) audiences. Through Lisbeth Gruwez dances Bob Dylan, and Into the Open Voetvolk succeeded to bring music lovers into contact with contemporary dance. Nomadics, Voetvolk’s latest creation, invites people to undergo long hikes with Gruwez and the dance crew before watching the show, as a way to connect with the audience.

Voetvolk’s performances have been shown at Festival d’Avignon, Festival de Marseille, Julidans, Tanz im August, Dance Umbrella and the Venice Biennale, among many others.

Voetvolk is allied to KVS (the Royal Flemish Theatre), kc NONA and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp.

Voetvolk is supported by the Flemish Community and the Belgian Tax Shelter.
