IDA DON’T CRY ME LOVE

But who is Ida? In this creation, Lara Barsacq lifts the veil of the artist whose creation “Dance of the Seven Veils” shocked all of Paris. Ida Rubinstein, star of the Russian Ballet. Fascinating. Passionate about the unfathomable female figures of mythology. She is also the one who ordered pieces to her own timing – including the Bolero, by Maurice Ravel (1928).

Ida, mime and tragedienne. But also scandalous, dismissed as a basket case, where she dared to embody the nude Salome of Oscar Wilde. A century later, Lara Barsacq goes to meet the muse who is a source of intact inspiration for her. In the scene, three artists celebrate the memory, the glory, and the absence of Ida. Mixing the historical and the trivial, the grandiose and the absurde, the brilliant painter and decorator of the Russian Ballet, composing an ode to freedom and tutelary figures who breathe energy and audacity. A hymn of poetry and dance as a self-invention.

Biography(s)

Lara Barsacq is a choreographer, dancer and actress. She likes to mix the tracks between archives, fictions, incarnation and documentary. Starting from the story, the autobiographical rituals and the material of the real, she tries to imagine dances, metaphors and to switch into the incarnation.

Trained at the CNSMDP in Paris in contemporary dance, she joined the Batsheva Company with choreographer Ohad Naharin, between 1992 and 1996. From 1994 to 2004, she devoted herself to choreography, whether for her own projects or at the request of the CNSMDP in Paris and professional companies like Ensemble Batsheva. She became an interpreter of Jean-Marc Heim Compagnie, ALias, Jérôme Bel, Lies Pauwels and Ben Benaouisse, Tristero, Ballets C de la B, GdRA, Benny Claessens, Arkadi Zaides, la Compagnie du Zerep, Danae Theodoridou and Lisi Estaras.

Since 2004, she is both an actress and a dancer, working from improvisation and texts by authors. She develops her choreographic work in collaboration with Gaël Santisteva.

After 15 years as an interpreter, Lara returned to choreography with the personal project “Lost in Ballets russes” created on April 19th, 2018 at La Raffinerie (Brussels). Her second piece “IDA don’t cry me love” premiered on October 18th, 2019 in the frame of Biennale de Charleroi Danse. Her next project – “Fruit Tree” – will be created on October 15th & 16th, 2021 at the Biennale de Charleroi Danse.

Lara Barsacq is Choreographer in residence at Charleroi danse, that is committed to producing, presenting and supporting her works from 2020 until the end of 2022.
