In a medieval/fashion universe interweaving what are called “traditional” dances and contemporary club dances, Happy Hype invents a new form, utopic and universal, where public space becomes a place for festive, contemporary and inclusive rituals.

Quietly, seamlessly, the Ouinchs (sly little fairies) perform an ambiguous yet voracious set of dances, offering the audiences the opportunity to join them, to dance with them. Their only requirement: affirming their uniqueness and being willing to share their frenetic, powerful and unifying joie de vivre as far and as fast as possible. Happy Hype is actually inspired by Hype Call, a subsection of the Krumping culture: the dancers, supported and encouraged by their friends and entourages, would dance themselves into a trance state. The music is mixed by the electrifying DJ Mulah, melding Afro-Urban and hip-hop rhythms, and the Ouinch Ouinch commit fully, sharing their joy in celebrating their bodies in movement. It vibes, it wiggles, it shines! Wild, definitely urban, queer, Happy Hype is an explosion of energy, an invitation to absolutely let go, to roll into recommitting fully to one’s body.

Biography(s)

OUINCH OUINCH are a moving collective whose artistic vision is currently in the hands of Karine Dahouindji and Marius Barthaux. Since 2019, the company has created three plays and a host of performances, always in a horizontal creative process.

OUINCH OUINCH create shows that are raw, carnivalesque, absurd, often festive, funny and direct. Shows that encourage the emergence of intense and authentic relationships with reality, while at the same time being steeped in queer, pop and dreamlike fictions. All with a colourful aesthetic that mixes period references. Sometimes retrofuturistic, sometimes medieval, the OUINCH, mischievous and naïve little fairies, often wander outside, sometimes in clubs or even in theatres, enchanting the world and its inhabitants with their buffoonish presence.

The collective OUINCH OUINCH develops a processual, fun approach to collective, cross-disciplinary, in situ, festive and immersive creation. Their two latest creations, HAPPY HYPE (re-created in 2021) and CACHALOTTE (created in 2022), continue their international tour.
