Faire parler les archives des non-alignés

Deciphering a massive amount of research, connections and reconstitutions, the Serbian director Mila Turajlić reveals a slew of forgotten images, confirming the power of video as a tool in a political battle.

There are hundreds of forgotten film reels in the film archives in Belgrade, which Mila Turajlić has brought to life. Filmed in the 50s by Stevan Labucović, Tito’s official photographer, when Tito was “President for life” in Yugoslavia, these images document the beginning of the movements of the non-aligned. It was the Cold War and this movement included the countries who refused to participate in the East- West standoff, seeking instead a third path, focusing on the processes of decolonialization and independence. Onstage, Mila Turajlić comments on these archives, overlapping them with current statements by victims of war or authoritarian regimes. Faire parler les archives des non-alignés examines the political imaginations of the past and of today, adding an echo to the anti-imperialist ideals embodied in these images.

Biography(s)

Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Mila Turajlić is a filmmaker and artist. Initially drawn to a career in political activism, she later pivoted towards artistic practice as a more subversive and effective form of engagement. From then on she chose the path of documentary filmmaking as a gesture of restoring forgotten stories. Her works are built on a combination of oral histories, cinematic archives, and found footage to create a new language that confronts memory and ruins with the vanishing narratives of History. In 2010, she directed Cinema Komunisto (winner of 16 awards, including the FOCAL Award for Creative Use of Archival Footage), The Other Side of Everything in 2017 (winner of 33 awards, including the IDFA Award for Best Feature Documentary), and then the diptych Scenes from the Labudović Reels (Non-Aligned & Cine-Guerillas) in 2022 – an archival road trip exploring the birth of the Third World project.
