A separation from habit

Lebanese musician, producer, and sound engineer Joy Moughanni’s first solo album, “A Separation From Habit,” is an introspective exploration of cyclical trauma that transcends the narrative of post-war identity. This collection of electronic performances and sonic collages draws from archival recordings made on tape by the late Georges Tarazi between 1975 and 1985. Through these fragments Moughanni confronts themes of occupation and the ongoing crises that have shaped the Lebanese experience since the first Israeli invasion in 1978, carrying through to the contemporary realities of October 2024, during which the album was created.

Biography(s)

Joy Moughanni is a Beirut-based producer, engineer, and songwriter, as well as a partner at Tunefork Studios. Mentored by renowned Lebanese producer Fadi Tabbal, he formed the electronic and pop groups Pomme Rouge and Gizzmo, producing four EPs. Transitioning to a solo career, he became a sought-after production collaborator in Beirut’s alternative scene, producing several albums with regional artists. After the Lebanese crisis, Joy joined the 2023 OneBeat program, working with artists from various countries, producing ambient hip-hop tracks with Nappy Nina and Christopher Botta, and developing a MATA Festival installation in NYC. Joy’s work explores sound in relational contexts, drawing from his architectural studies and spatial sonic installations.

Recently, he has been sonically exploring themes of personal and political manipulation through his debut solo album “A Separation From Habit” Voted #48 on The Quietus 2025 Album of the year.

With this album, he has toured his audiovisual performance at various venues, including the Lebanese National Museum as part of the Alfred Tarazi installation, the Beirut Art Center, the Beirut Irtijal Festival, and Metropolis Cinema in Beirut. He has also performed in the UK, such as at The Listening Gallery in Glasgow as part of the Common Ground initiative with CCA Glasgow, and in collaboration with visual artist Morphogen at Wavetable in Edinburgh.

Additionally, he has delivered a series of workshops in Beirut, Cairo, Scotland, France, and New York City as part of his “Nothing Outside” ambient research project.

Joy continues to build solidarity within Lebanon’s small but vibrant artistic community.
